Cockroach in your Sacramento home? Check this first

Finding a cockroach indoors is a reason to look closer. But one sighting does not tell you the species or the size of the problem. If you are a Sacramento homeowner thinking about our cockroach service, start with a clear photo and the exact location of the sighting.

Before cleaning the area, note where the insect went. Something like “under the dishwasher beside the sink” gives you a specific place to check again, while “Somewhere in the kitchen” is harder to follow up on.

Does one cockroach mean there are more?

Possibly. Some cockroaches breed indoors, but others normally live outside and sometimes come into buildings. UC IPM separates indoor species, such as German and brownbanded cockroaches, from outdoor species that can wander inside.

Try to get a photo with enough detail to identify the insect, and note any further sightings, including the room and date.

If you find another insect, photograph that one too, and do not assume it is the same species because it was in the same room.

Sticky monitoring traps can help you find activity and keep a specimen so it can be identified. Keep them where children and pets cannot reach them. Follow the product instructions.

UC IPM suggests checking them daily for several days to see where the most cockroaches are being caught. They are a monitoring tool. They do not show that the whole problem has been treated.

What can you change in the kitchen now?

Start with food storage and any visible leaks. EPA recommends closing food containers, cleaning spills and crumbs, and keeping trash covered.

UC IPM says an adult German cockroach can hide in a crack 1/16 inch wide. So check beneath the sink for dampness and behind appliances. Wiping only the countertop is not enough.

If a fitting leaks, fix it or tell the person who handles maintenance (see EPA’s household pest prevention guidance).

Also look at the things coming indoors. The EPA advises checking boxes and bags for cockroaches and reducing cardboard clutter. UC IPM says to clear clutter especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

Should you use a bug bomb?

UC IPM advises that total-release foggers often fail to reach the cracks where cockroaches hide. UC IPM adds that sprays can scatter them into other parts of a building.

If you have already used a product, keep its name and application date with your sighting notes, and tell the technician where you used it.
