Mosquito Control in Sacramento, CA
Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so our mosquito control in Sacramento starts with a walk of the yard to find what is holding it. UC IPM says outdoor sprays alone have no lasting effect. The breeding sites come first, and the shaded spots where adults rest are treated after.
- We find what is holding standing water, deal with it, then treat the foliage and shaded spots where adults rest.
- Plans start at $39 a month (quarterly), plus a $150 initial cost. The bi-monthly plan keeps treatment going through the months it matters.
- If you are still getting bitten after a spray, a breeding site was usually missed, since adults are replaced from the water.
- We come to you in Sacramento, West Sacramento, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Natomas, Roseville, Rocklin and Carmichael.

How mosquito control works
A mosquito needs very little water and not much time. Plant saucers, blocked gutters, a tarp fold, an unused container, a low spot that never drains. Around Natomas the drainage canals and detention basins do the same thing on a much larger scale.
Once the breeding sites are dealt with, we treat the leaves and shady spots where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.
What the plans include for mosquitoes
Each plan sheet words it a little differently. The quarterly plan includes a mosquito barrier and the bi-monthly plan lists active mosquito barrier reduction treatments, while the monthly plan lists continuous mosquito and outdoor breeding defense.
Visits run every three months, every two months or every month on a 12-month agreement.
Photos from our own jobs show backpack sprayers worked along fence lines, planting beds and the edge of a back lawn. A green mist blower is among the equipment.
Why the water comes first
The UC Statewide IPM Program Pest Notes on mosquitoes say outdoor sprays can cut adult numbers for a while but have no lasting effect. They say management should go after larvae and standing water. In summer the whole cycle from egg to adult can finish in a week or less, depending on the water temperature.
On our visits the yard walk happens before anything goes on the foliage.
UC IPM notes that Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus reached California in 2011 and 2013. Their larvae can grow in water as small as a bottle cap holds. Backyards full of assorted debris are among the hardest places to clear them from, UC IPM adds.

Do I need mosquito control?
Being bitten in your own yard in the evening. Or mosquitoes resting in shaded planting and under decking during the day.
Some of it is public work. The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District raises mosquitofish and delivers them at no charge to residents of Sacramento and Yolo counties where there is a need. Its technician plants them in the water source it has identified.
It also takes reports of neglected swimming pools and sends a technician out to treat them. If the water is on a neighbour’s property, report it to the District. Do not go onto someone else’s land.
The UC IPM list is worth a weekly look. Pet dishes and watering troughs get fresh water, unused pots go upside down, rain barrels stay sealed, gutters and downspouts get cleared of leaves, and the lawn gets watered without pooling.
For bites, the same notes list repellents with DEET or picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. They also list screens on doors and windows with any holes patched.

Frequently asked questions: mosquito control
What month are mosquitoes most active in California?
UC IPM gives no single month. In summer the cycle from egg to adult can finish in a week or less. It also says West Nile virus outbreaks in North America usually start in summer and run into autumn.
Is it worth spraying your yard for mosquitoes?
Only alongside dealing with the water. UC IPM says outdoor sprays can cut adult numbers for a while but have no lasting effect. It also says still getting bitten after a spray usually means a breeding site was missed.
How much does it cost to treat your yard for mosquitoes?
Three plans, all on a 12-month agreement: $39 a month quarterly, $49 a month bi-monthly, or $79 a month monthly, plus a $150 initial cost. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.
How can I control the mosquitoes in my yard?
Start with the water. UC IPM says management should focus on larvae and standing water, so empty or turn over anything holding it once a week, keep rain barrels sealed and clear the gutters. Then the foliage and shaded spots where adults rest get treated.
Is there a yard treatment for mosquitoes?

Does Sacramento County spray for mosquitoes?
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District does. Its 2026 ground treatment list, read on 7 October 2026, shows night-time truck treatments in early October. Some aim at invasive species in Land Park and Curtis Park, and others are where traps found West Nile positive mosquito pools.
What mosquito viruses are commonly found in California?
UC IPM names Western equine encephalomyelitis, St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile virus as viruses California mosquitoes can transmit. It notes that mosquitoes here also carry dog heartworm. The Sacramento-Yolo District tracks West Nile virus activity across both counties.
Are mosquitoes invasive?

What is a mosquito’s worst enemy?
In a pond or trough, mosquitofish. UC IPM calls them an important control for larvae in man-made water that does not connect to natural waters. The Sacramento-Yolo District delivers them at no charge to residents who need them, and UC IPM also says releasing them into streams or lakes is illegal.
Why do mosquitoes bite at 3am?
Some species here bite at night. UC IPM says that in low-elevation areas such as the Central Valley some mosquitoes tend to bite at night and others during the day. Screens on doors and windows, with any holes patched, keep them out of bedrooms.
