How wasp and hornet removal works
Wasps build where there is shelter and a way in: the underside of an eave, a vent under the roof overhang, a gap in a shed wall or the inside of a disused barbecue.
The nest gets treated and removed, and the technician looks at the opening that made the spot attractive in the first place.
Which wasp is it
The UC Statewide IPM Program Pest Notes on social wasps split the common ones three ways. Yellowjackets are half an inch to an inch long, with jagged yellow and black bands and almost no visible waist.
Yellowjackets nest in holes in the ground, inside wall cavities, or in gray paper nests with a single entrance.
Paper wasps have long slender waists and hang open-celled nests under eaves, rarely bigger than an outstretched hand, while mud daubers are dark, thread-waisted, and build small hard mud nests.
Paper wasps rarely sting, and UC IPM says their nests only need treating when they sit near people. A yellowjacket colony can reach 1,500 to 15,000 wasps depending on the species.
Yellowjackets defend the nest harder as the season goes on. One that nests inside a wall can leave a wet patch that turns into a hole in the wall or ceiling.
One of the photos from our own jobs is a paper nest tucked under a concrete railing. Another shows a technician up an extension ladder at the roofline.
Queens start nests in spring once the weather warms, according to UC IPM. By late summer the colonies slow down or stop growing. In fall the foraging yellowjackets turn into scavengers that show up at outdoor meals and crawl into open soda cans.

Do I need wasp and hornet removal?
Wasps keep flying to one point under an eave or into a vent, or there is a visible nest under a roofline, in a shed or in an outbuilding.
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District can sometimes deal with nests in the ground, in trees or in walls, but it does no structural pest control. Once a nest has gone into the structure of the house, or sits on an upper floor of a multi-story building, the District says it cannot treat it. Those are the nests to call us about.
Until someone looks at it, UC IPM’s advice is plain: if one lands on you, wait for it to leave rather than swatting or running. Food, pet food and open soda cans outside are better covered. Garbage belongs in sealed cans, and ripe fruit on the ground draws them in.

Frequently asked questions: wasp and hornet removal
If I destroy a wasp nest, will they come back?
UC IPM says knocking down a newly started paper wasp nest early in the season sends the founding queen elsewhere. A grown yellowjacket nest is different. Spraying it yourself is likely to end in stings, even at night, and the note recommends a professional.
How much should I pay for a wasp nest removal?
Wasps are covered on all three plans: $39 a month quarterly, $49 a month bi-monthly, or $79 a month monthly, plus a $150 initial cost. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.
How to get rid of a massive wasp nest?
Call someone rather than spraying it. UC IPM says a yellowjacket colony can reach 1,500 to 15,000 wasps, and that nests inside walls or underground can sit well back from the visible entrance. It also says partly poisoned wasps stay agitated even the next day, so the technician locates the nest and treats it where it is.
Why are there so many wasps in my yard right now?
In fall, yellowjackets switch to scavenging. UC IPM says late in the season the colonies need sugar, and foraging yellowjackets turn up at picnics, garbage cans, pet food left outside and ripe fruit. Covering food and keeping garbage in sealed cans helps.
Do pest control get rid of wasps?
Yes. Wasps are listed on all three plan sheets, and we locate, treat and remove nests and close the opening. Bees are a different job, so call the office and describe what you are seeing.
Are California wasps aggressive?
Some are. UC IPM says paper wasps are much less defensive and rarely sting, and mud daubers rarely sting too. Yellowjackets that nest in the ground or in cavities, such as the western yellowjacket, defend their nests hard, more so as the season goes on.
Will a wasp chase you if you run?
UC IPM’s advice is not to swat or run if a wasp lands on you: wait for it to leave or brush it away gently. Most stings happen at the nest, and yellowjackets defend a disturbed nest hard.
What is the best time to get rid of a wasp nest?
Early, while it is small. UC IPM says newly started paper wasp nests can be knocked down early in the season, and that wasps are most likely to be in the nest at night, though stings are still likely after dark.
Will a wasp nest eventually go away?
Usually after one season. UC IPM says yellowjacket and paper wasp colonies normally live only one season, and new queens start fresh nests in spring. In very mild winters some yellowjacket colonies survive for several years.
What types of wasps are found in California?
UC IPM splits the common social wasps into yellowjackets and paper wasps, plus the solitary mud daubers. Paper wasp colonies run from 15 to 200 wasps, against 1,500 to 15,000 for a yellowjacket colony.
Do wasps chase you if you destroy their nest?
They defend it. UC IPM says wasps attack if they sense a poison being applied to their nest. It says partly poisoned, agitated wasps can be met some distance from the entrance, even the day after a treatment.
