Why Sacramento homes get pests

Sacramento sits where the American and Sacramento rivers meet. Land Park is mainly single-family homes, and Curtis Park is known for its vintage Victorian and bungalow homes. East Sacramento’s residential development began in the 1890s.

UC IPM’s Pest Notes: Rats says to put a tight-fitting cover on the crawl space. It also says to seal openings around pipes, cables and wires that enter through walls or the foundation.

UC IPM’s Pest Notes: Rats says roof rats are agile climbers with a tail longer than their head and body. They prefer fruits, tree nuts, berries, slugs and snails. They often eat citrus and avocados while the fruit is still on the tree.

Pests in Sacramento through the year

UC IPM says the adult female black widow is shiny black with a red hourglass marking on the underside. It says black widows are commonly found outdoors in sheltered, dry, undisturbed places such as wood piles and garages.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for a station a few miles south-east of downtown show about 23 days a year at 100 degrees or higher. Nearly all of them fall from June to September. The July rainfall normal is 0.00 inches.

Ants also come inside to escape dry, hot weather, UC IPM says. See ant control in Sacramento for how we treat them.

UC IPM says cat flea larvae develop faster at 70 to 90 degrees F. At the Sacramento 5 ESE station, the 1991-2020 normal high runs from 74 in April to 89 in June. UC IPM adds that fleas are found on pets all year, but their numbers climb in spring and early summer.

For mosquitoes on public land, the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District takes service requests and reports of mosquito breeding sources.

All about Sacramento, CA

Sacramento is the state capital and the seat of Sacramento County. It is laid out where the American River joins the Sacramento.

People call Sacramento the City of Trees. The usual claim is that it has more trees per person than any other city in the world, and the main street tree is the London plane.

UC IPM says roof rats have a strong attachment to their nest sites, so they come back if the nest sites are not removed. Our rodent inspection covers the attic, crawlspace, roofline, vents and garage.

Most of Sacramento’s rain, about 18 inches in an average year, falls between November and April. UC IPM says ants usually nest in soil, often next to buildings or along sidewalks.

Sacramento’s city limits run from Meadowview, in the southernmost part of the city, across the American River to Natomas.

Natomas has its own page, and so does West Sacramento, which is a separate city on the Yolo County side. If you are near the line somewhere else, our service areas page lists the eight towns we cover, or call the office and ask.

Frequently asked questions: pest control in Sacramento

How much does pest control cost in Sacramento?

Three plans, all on a 12-month agreement: $39 a month quarterly, $49 a month bi-monthly, or $79 a month monthly. Each adds a $150 initial cost. Rodent exclusion is quoted separately, starting at $500, because the price depends on how much of the house is open.

We give you the number before any work starts. Full details are on our pricing page, and general pest control covers what the plans include.

What pests are common in Sacramento?

Our plans name ants, spiders, roaches, rats and mice, and wasps. UC IPM says snap traps are the safest, most effective and most economical way to trap rats.

Is $50 a month for pest control a lot?

Our bi-monthly plan is $49 a month, with a visit every two months, on a 12-month agreement plus a $150 initial cost. It is the plan marked most popular on the plan sheet. It is also the first plan that lists rodent bait station maintenance.

What is the hardest pest to get rid of?

German cockroaches are on the exclusions line of all three of our plans. UC IPM says cockroaches hide by day in warm, dark, moist places like cracks, water meter boxes, sewers and crawl spaces. They come out at night to feed.

Should I clean my house before an exterminator comes?

UC IPM says to take out the garbage and indoor food waste bins often and to clean the bins regularly. It also says to look for holes and cracks in foundations and walls where ants get in. Seal what you find with caulk.

Is the treatment safe around children and pets in my Sacramento home?

Ask the technician what was applied and how long to keep children and pets off the treated areas. The product label sets that, and UC IPM says to follow the label and keep baits away from children and pets. Eco-conscious botanical treatments are also available on the plans.
