Rodent Control in Sacramento, CA
Rodent control in Sacramento starts with an inspection of the attic, the crawlspace and the roofline. UC IPM says roof rats are good climbers, so openings above ground level have to be plugged too. Summit Pest Control finds the openings, quotes the sealing work and removes the rodents already inside.
- A technician checks the attic, crawlspace, roofline, vents and garage, then gives you a plain list of what was found and where.
- Exclusion is quoted after the inspection, starting at $500, because the price depends on how much of the house is open.
- Rats and mice are on every plan, from $39 a month plus a $150 initial cost. Roof rat infestations are the exception: they are an exclusion on each plan and are quoted as exclusion work.

How rodent control works in Sacramento
Rodent control is two jobs done in order. The first is finding every opening the rodents are using. The second is closing those openings and removing the animals that are already inside.
The University of California’s Pest Notes on rats list three parts of successful rat control: sanitation, structural exclusion and population control. The note calls exclusion the most successful and longest-lasting of the three.
The visit follows the route a rat takes. The technician checks the roofline, the vents, the attic and the garage, and the crawlspace where the house has one.
The gap where utilities enter gets a look too. You get a plain list of what was found and where, and the quote is built from that list.
What a Sacramento quote depends on
Exclusion work is quoted after the inspection and starts at $500. A house with a few small gaps at the roofline is a small job.
A house with a rusted crawlspace vent, an open gap around the utilities and damage under the roof overhang is a bigger one. Nobody can know which before looking. So there is no number over the phone, and you have the figure before any sealing starts.
Rats and mice get in differently
The notes put the line for mice at a quarter inch: a house mouse can squeeze under a gap a quarter inch tall or through an opening 3/8 inch wide. A young rat can get under a door with a half-inch gap. That is why a door sweep or a pipe collar that looks fine from standing height can still be open to a mouse.
How a plan fits in
A plan is ongoing coverage and exclusion is repair work on the building, so the two are priced separately. The $49 a month bi-monthly plan includes rodent bait station maintenance.
Every plan lists roof rat infestations as an exclusion, which is why a roof rat finding turns into an exclusion quote. Plan prices are on the pricing page.

Why Sacramento homes get rats and mice
A house with a crawlspace has vents, plumbing and wiring under the floor, and the inspection covers them.
Sacramento is known as the City of Trees. Wikipedia says the first recorded use of the name was in 1855 and that the main street tree is the London plane.
The UC note on roof rats does not name any city. It says roof rats nest above ground in trees, shrubs and dense plants such as ivy, and that areas with mature landscaping make good habitat, and so does vegetation on riverbanks and streams.
The same note says overhanging limbs within 6 feet of a roof should be removed.
Why autumn matters
NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the Sacramento 5 ESE station, about 4.5 miles from downtown, show the average overnight low falling from 58.8 degrees in September to 45.3 in November. The rainfall normal climbs from 0.15 inch to 1.78 inches. The UC note on house mice says mice living outdoors frequently move into homes in autumn when the nights get colder, and the rat note says rats stay active all year.

Do I need rodent control?
One sign is noise: scratching or running in the attic or the ceiling at night. Others are droppings, gnaw marks, a musky smell from mice, and smudge marks where rats rub their fur against beams, rafters and pipes.
Look outside as well. The UC note lists droppings by the pet dish, nests in a firewood stack, gnawed fruit or nuts under the trees, burrows beside a compost pile or garbage can, and rats running along a utility line or a fence top at dusk. Rat gnaw marks run about a sixth of an inch wide, and a mouse leaves marks about half that. For burrows along a foundation, see Norway rats in West Sacramento.
UC IPM’s notes say rats and mice gnaw on electrical wires. The mouse note adds that many fires of unknown origin are believed to be caused by rodents chewing on wiring. The rat note says rodent control takes less time and effort when the numbers are still low.

Frequently asked questions: rodent control in Sacramento
What is the cheapest way to get rid of rodents?
UC IPM calls snap traps the most economical way to trap rats, and trapping a great first step when only a few mice are present. Where the house has open entry points, exclusion is quoted after the inspection from $500. The three plans, $39, $49 and $79 a month with a $150 initial cost, also cover rats and mice, and the pricing page lists what each includes.
What is the most effective rodent control?
Closing the openings and removing the rodents already inside, in the same job. The UC note on rats calls exclusion the most successful and longest-lasting part of rat control, and the house mouse note calls it the most successful and permanent form of control. Traps or bait alone only deal with the animals already in the building.
Should I be concerned if I see a rat in my yard?
It is worth acting on. UC IPM says that once rats have moved into a garden or landscaping, it is only a matter of time before they show up indoors unless the house is truly rodent proof. It also says control takes less time and effort while numbers are low.
What gets rid of rats quickly?
Snap traps, set where rats travel, while the openings get closed. UC IPM calls snap traps the safest, most effective and most economical way to trap rats and says to use enough of them to finish quickly. Traps alone leave the way in open.
What is a rat’s biggest enemy?
Cats and owls eat rats and mice, UC IPM says. But predators cannot significantly control animals that breed as fast as rats do, and pet food left outdoors for cats draws rats in. We do not do wildlife removal.
Is it worth hiring rodent control?
When the openings are not obvious, usually yes. UC IPM says finding roof rat entry points takes longer than for Norway rats and that openings above ground level have to be plugged too. The inspection covers the attic, roofline, vents, garage and crawlspace.
