How cockroach control works

UC IPM says almost all cockroaches are nocturnal. They hide in tight, warm spaces during the day, so the treatment has to reach those spaces rather than the floor.

We treat behind and under appliances, under sinks, and around pipes and drains. We also treat outside, where they are getting in.

Which roach you have

It matters, because the plans treat them differently. The University of California pest note on cockroaches calls the German cockroach the most common indoor species in the state. It is about half an inch, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head, and it lives in kitchens and bathrooms close to food and water.

It is at its worst in apartments and other multi-unit buildings. It breeds the fastest of the common roaches: UC puts one female and her offspring at over 30,000 in a year.

The bigger, darker ones in garages, drains and water meter boxes are outdoor roaches, usually American, Oriental or Turkestan. The same note says the Turkestan is pushing the Oriental out in the Central Valley. Turkestan females look like Oriental ones apart from cream-coloured markings behind the head and around the short wings.

American roaches come up from sewers into ground floors where a pipe is damaged or a drain trap is faulty. Because they move through sewers, the note says they can carry the bacteria behind food poisoning. Brownbanded roaches are the rare indoor one, about 1% of indoor infestations by the UC count.

The bi-monthly plan lists American roaches as covered. All three plans list German cockroaches as an exclusion, so a German roach problem is not part of the $39, $49 or $79 rate. Call the office and describe what you are seeing before you book.
