How ant control works

A trail of ants in a kitchen leads back to a colony. That colony is usually outside, under a slab edge or in a planting bed against the house, so spraying the trail leaves it producing more.

The work is treating the trail and the nesting and entry areas around the outside of the house, and on the $49 a month bi-monthly plan, a technician comes back every two months to keep that treatment up.

What the research says about the ants you are seeing

The most common ant in and around California homes is the Argentine ant, according to the UC Statewide IPM Program Pest Notes on ants. Of roughly 270 ant species in the state, fewer than a dozen are real pests. The notes also say that spraying ants indoors will not stop more of them coming in.

If baits are part of the fix, UC IPM says they are slow on purpose. The workers carry them back to the colony and the queens. It can take 5 to 10 days before you see fewer ants.

Argentine ants nest differently from most species, per the same notes. The nests are often shallow, just under the soil surface. The colonies link up into one large supercolony with many queens.

Ants come inside for food and water, for warmth, or to get away from hot, dry weather or flooded ground. UC IPM says a trail can appear suddenly when food runs out outside or the weather turns. For the fall pattern, see ants inside after the first rain in Elk Grove.

In the garden, ants tend aphids, scales and mealybugs for their honeydew and protect them from their natural enemies. So an ant problem outside often comes with an aphid problem on the shrubs.

Do I need ant control?

Look for a line of ants along a counter, a windowsill or a baseboard. Look for activity around an outside tap, a slab edge or an irrigation line.

The first step in UC IPM’s notes is a sponge and soapy water, which takes the scent trail off the counter.

Food in sealed containers holds up where plastic bags and open packets do not. A dripping tap is worth fixing.

Pull mulch, grass and planting back at least a foot from the foundation. Deal with aphid-covered shrubs and ripe fruit on trees next to the house, since ants feed there too.

Ants are listed with spiders, wasps and roaches on all three plan sheets. So the trail work is covered whichever visit frequency you pick.

How to permanently get rid of an ant infestation?

Treat the colony and the places the ants come in, not only the trail. UC IPM says spraying around the foundation does not give permanent control either, because it kills foraging ants and leaves the colony and its queens. Baits the workers carry back to the nest, sealed entry points and food kept out of reach are what last.

Why do I suddenly have flying ants?

Those are the winged males and females. UC IPM says a colony starts producing them after a few years, and they leave the nest in large numbers in warm weather to mate and start new colonies. Most lose their wings soon after the flight.

How expensive is pest control for ants?

Should I hire pest control for ants?

Hire someone when a trail keeps coming back after you have wiped it up and put food away. The colony is still close to the house. Ants are covered on all three plans, and the technician tells you what was applied.

What gets rid of ants immediately?

For the ants you can see, a sponge and soapy water. UC IPM says vacuuming or wiping a trail with soapy water can remove foraging ants as well as an insecticide spray for a while, and it takes off the scent trail. It does not reach the colony, and we treat inside only where there is an active trail.

What are pavement ants?

A dark brown to black ant about 3/16 inch long. UC IPM says pavement ants nest in lawns or under stones or boards, build mounds along sidewalks and foundations or near water, and eat sweets, proteins and grease.

Why shouldn’t you squish ants?

Squashing a few does nothing to the colony. One common species smells when crushed: UC IPM describes the odorous house ant, 1/8 inch and dark brown to shiny black, as giving off a very strong odor. Wiping the trail with soapy water also removes the scent the others follow.

What ants are in Sacramento?
