Mostly in and around the bed rather than the sheets. UC IPM says bed bugs feed at night. During the day they hide along mattress seams, in box springs and in cracks in the bed frame and nearby furniture, usually within 6 feet of where people sleep.
How to 100% know you have bed bugs?
Look for dark specks of dried droppings on the sheets and around the bed, small blood spots where a bug was crushed, and pale shed skins and egg cases. You may also see the bugs themselves, which are flat, oval, about 1/5 inch long and rusty red.

Usually not. Treatment targets the seams, frame and the room. UC IPM also says mattress encasements made for bed bugs seal in any that are inside, so they cannot bite and eventually die.
What kills bed bugs immediately?
Heat, applied properly. UC IPM says a home dryer on its hottest setting for at least 10 to 15 minutes works for clothing and bedding, and that commercial room heating needs at least 140 degrees F for two hours. A single vacuuming rarely gets all the bugs and eggs.
How long does it take for an exterminator to get rid of bed bugs?
Plan on more than one visit. Bed bugs usually need a follow-up to catch the eggs that hatch after the first treatment. UC IPM says management takes follow-up monitoring to confirm the infestation has gone.
What causes bed bugs in the house?
They are carried in. UC IPM says people bring bed bugs home in luggage, clothes, bedding and furniture, picked up in hotels or other overnight stays. It says second-hand mattresses and furniture are high-risk sources.
