How flea and tick treatment works

Most of a flea problem is eggs and larvae rather than the adults on the pet, and they sit in soft furnishings, the carpet pile and the shaded ground where the pet lies down.

We treat inside where the pet spends time. Outside, we treat the yard areas it uses, which is usually shaded ground rather than open lawn. Ticks get treated in the cover along fence lines and planting, where the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District says they wait on plant tips.

The flea life cycle, in numbers

The UC Statewide IPM Program Pest Notes on fleas put figures on it. The common flea in California is the cat flea, and it bites dogs, cats and people.

A female lays 20 to 50 eggs a day, the eggs drop off the pet into bedding and carpet, and they hatch in two to five days. At normal room temperature the full cycle can run in about 18 days.

The awkward stage is the cocoon. In cool conditions a fully formed flea can sit in one for up to 12 months, then come out with warmth and the vibration of someone walking across the carpet.

Carpet treatments with an insect growth regulator, a product that acts on flea eggs and young fleas, kill larvae but not the pupae in their cocoons. So adults can keep emerging for up to two weeks afterwards. Vacuum through those two weeks and throw the bag out sealed.

Treating the animal itself is a job for your vet.

UC IPM also covers what fleas carry. A flea bite is a small red spot with a red halo. Some people and pets develop an allergic dermatitis from them and can itch for up to five days after a single bite.

Cat fleas carry dog and cat tapeworm, which a pet picks up by swallowing a flea while grooming.
