How spider control works

Spider work is mostly mechanical. Clearing webs removes the established sites, and treating the eaves, door frames and garage takes away the insects the spiders are there for in the first place.

UC IPM’s spider note puts it simply: the more insects there are in a building, the more likely it is to have spiders living there.

What the job looks like on the ground

Four of the photos from our own jobs show an extension pole in use. One shows a technician knocking webbing off the eaves above a garage, and in another the pole head is up at an eave hung with icicle lights. A third shows another tech working overhead under a patio cover, and the last shows a cobweb duster resting on a trimmed boxwood hedge.

The heaviest webbing in that set was strung across a wooden fence gate and wrapped round an outside utility box.

That order lines up with the UC Statewide IPM Program Pest Notes on spiders. The notes say insecticides will not give long-term control outdoors and put the weight on taking down webs and hiding places. So the webbing comes down first, then the eaves, door frames and garage corners get treated.

Black widows

The same notes name the western black widow as the most common harmful spider in California. Adult females are shiny black with a red or orange hourglass on the underside, and they sit in dark, dry, undisturbed places like woodpiles and cluttered garages.

Most bites happen when someone reaches into one of those spots while cleaning, so wear gloves to clear out a garage shelf or a stack of pots. Their egg sacs are round, about half an inch across, creamy yellow to tan and papery. If you find sacs like that, say where when you call.

If someone is bitten by a black widow, UC IPM says to stay calm and get medical advice promptly, and it helps to catch the spider so it can be identified. For most other spiders the notes put a bite at no worse than a bee sting. Wash it and use ice or a cold compress.

Do I need spider control?

Webbing in eaves, corners of the garage, around door frames and outdoor light fittings, or egg sacs in sheltered corners.

Porch lights make it worse. UC IPM points out that outdoor lighting pulls in insects and the insects pull in spiders, and suggests keeping light fixtures away from windows and doorways where you can.

Between visits, the same notes suggest keeping leaf litter, trash and heavy planting off the foundation. UC IPM also suggests trimming growth back from the walls and sealing gaps round doors and windows. It adds that garage boxes should be stored off the floor with the lids taped shut.

The small, light yellow spider running across walls and ceilings at night may be the yellow sac spider. UC IPM describes it spinning a silken sac in the corners of ceilings and walls or behind shelves and pictures.

New houses in developments can also get wolf spiders that lost their outdoor living places when the ground was cleared, per UC IPM.

What is the best way to rid a house of spiders?

Vacuum them up and clear the webs, then deal with the insects drawing them in. UC IPM says vacuuming works well because spiders’ soft bodies rarely survive the trip through the hose. Outside we clear the webs and treat the eaves and entryways they settle in.

What’s the worst spider to have in your house?

In California, the western black widow. UC IPM calls it the most common spider capable of seriously injuring people, usually found in dry, sheltered, undisturbed spots like woodpiles and garages. Tell the office where you have seen one so the technician arrives prepared.
