Rodent Exclusion in Sacramento, CA

Rodent exclusion is sealing the ways rats and mice get into the building. UC IPM calls it the most successful and longest-lasting rat control, since trapping alone leaves the openings. Our rodent exterminators seal those routes, remove the rats and mice already inside, and quote the work from $500.

  • We seal the routes rats and mice use to get in and remove the ones already inside.
  • Exclusion is quoted after an inspection, starting at $500. The price depends on how much of the house is open.
  • Trapping alone removes what is inside but leaves the openings in place.
  • We come to you in Sacramento, West Sacramento, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Natomas, Roseville, Rocklin and Carmichael.

How rodent exclusion works

Rodents use openings that are already there. These include a gap where a pipe enters the wall, a crawlspace vent that has rusted through, a roofline junction that never closed properly and a garage door seal that has flattened.

UC IPM says a mouse can get under a gap a quarter inch tall, and a young rat under a door with a half-inch gap.

Exclusion is quoted after an inspection, because the price depends on how much of the house is open. A few entry points is a small job. A house with an open crawlspace and a damaged roofline is a bigger one.

Quotes start at $500 and we give you the number before anything starts. The plan prices on our pricing page are separate from exclusion work.

A customer’s attic inspection

A Google review from July 2026 describes where exclusion work starts: “He found several health concerns in our attic during the inspection and came up with the perfect plan to fix everything.” The inspection comes first on every exclusion job. The quote follows from what it finds.

Roof rat or Norway rat

The two rats UC describes for California homes get in differently. Its pest note on rats describes the roof rat as a climber with a tail longer than its head and body. It nests up in trees, shrubs and dense plants and, once inside, in attics, walls, false ceilings and cabinets.

The Norway rat is stockier, burrows along foundations and under woodpiles, and mostly stays on the ground floor. Roof rats also tend to carry food off and eat it somewhere else, where Norway rats often eat as they go.

Roof rats are why the roofline gets as much attention as the foundation. The note says openings above ground level have to be plugged too, and that finding a roof rat’s entry points usually takes longer than a Norway rat’s. For the attic and yard signs, see roof rats in Roseville.

UC’s guidance is to seal anything larger than a quarter inch, which keeps out mice as well as rats. The materials are steel wool, wire screen or sheet metal, since rats chew through plastic, foam, wood and caulk.

Vent covers take galvanized half-inch mesh and never lightweight chicken wire. Ask the technician what is going into each opening on your quote.

A plan and exclusion are separate things. All three plans list rats and mice as covered, and the bi-monthly plan includes rodent bait station maintenance. But every plan lists roof rat infestations as an exclusion, and exclusion is quoted on its own after an inspection.

Rodent exclusion and inspection are the work we lead with, next to the 12-month plans.

Do I need rodent exclusion?

Scratching in the ceiling or walls at night, droppings along a wall or in the back of a cupboard, or a smell that will not go away.

The UC IPM rat notes list these signs: droppings near where food is prepared or stored or by the pet food, gnawed fruit or nuts in the yard, nests behind boxes in a cluttered garage, burrows under bins or compost, and rats moving along utility lines or fence tops at dusk. The wires and fence tops point to roof rats. Indoors, the note says, rats can contaminate food and pass diseases to people and pets.

For mice, the house mouse note calls exclusion the most successful and permanent form of control, and a mouse can get through an opening as small as a quarter inch.

For rats already inside, the rat note calls snap traps the safest way to trap them. For roof rats it says to set them off the ground, on ledges, pipes or beams.

Frequently asked questions: rodent exclusion

How much does mice exclusion cost?

It is quoted after an inspection, starting at $500. The price depends on how much of the house is open, so nobody can give you a real number over the phone.

How to seal your home from rodents?

Find every opening first, which is what the inspection does. That means roofline junctions, vents, the gaps where pipes and wires enter, the garage door seal and the crawlspace. Then each one is closed with material rodents cannot chew through, including the openings above ground level that roof rats use.

What keeps rats away permanently in the house?

Exclusion plus ongoing sanitation. UC IPM calls sealing the building the most successful and longest-lasting rat control. It says sanitation has to continue or rats quickly return: garbage in bins with tight lids, fallen fruit picked up, pet food stored in rodent-proof containers.

Does Sacramento have a rat problem?

UC IPM does not rank cities. It says neighborhoods with mature landscaping and vegetation along rivers and streams make good roof rat habitat, and Sacramento sits on the American and Sacramento rivers. Every one of our plans lists roof rat infestations as an exclusion, so they are quoted as exclusion work.

What qualifies as a rat infestation?

UC IPM gives signs rather than a number: droppings near food or pet food, gnaw marks, nests in a firewood stack, burrows under bins or compost, noises in the attic, and rats on utility lines or fence tops at dusk. Any of these is worth an inspection.

What time of year is worst for rats?

Rats are active all year, UC IPM says, so it is worth checking for signs in every season. House mice are different: where they live outdoors, they often move into homes in autumn as the nights get colder.
